10 year regional plan

The qathet Regional District’s updated 10 year Solid Waste Management and Resource Recovery Plan (SWMP) of 2017 was approved by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

It includes more opportunities to recycle; compost yard, garden and food waste; clean up our contaminated waste incinerator site off Marine Avenue; and build a Resource Recovery Centre (including transfer station). Public consultation took place in the fall of 2017 and feedback was consolidated and forwarded to the qathet Regional District for consideration.

What is a Solid Waste Management Plan?

A Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP) is a blueprint for how regional districts will reduce, reuse, recycle, compost and dispose of garbage for the next 10-20 years.

These plans take into consideration current waste generated at the time of the plan.  This is assessed through a waste composition study.
What is a Waste Composition Study?
The qathet Regional District (qRD) undertook a two-season waste composition study to obtain information about the types of waste materials being disposed at the Augusta Transfer Station and their relative quantities. The information derived from these studies provides a baseline for staff to assess the effectiveness of current programs and to make recommendations to further increase diversion opportunities.
