Composting Advisory Committee

Discussion on Centralized Composting in Powell River

The qathet Regional District (formerly the Powell River Regional District) board voted on September 19th, 2011 to move in the direction of centralized composting for the region.  This motion was based on the recommendation provided to the Committee of the Whole with a proposed detailed action plan for working with the City of Powell River on collection logistics, transportation and processing of organic materials.  At the conclusion of the study, it was determined that it was not feasible at this time to proceed with Centralized Composting in Powell River.

Committee presented recommendation to the board
In the summer of 2011, he committee voted unanimously to recommend the pursuit of a source-separated organics collection system for our region.  The committee made this recommendation after thoughtful discussions, a review of the feasibility analysis prepared by Net Zero Waste, site tours of comparable facilities and debate on the costs and benefits of backyard composting versus municipal collection.

Composting facility tours
Six members of the Composting Advisory Committee took tours of various composting facilities in our region.  On February 29th, 2012 the committee went to Vancouver Island and toured Chemainus Composting, the ICC facility in Nanaimo, and the bio-solids facility at the Cumberland landfill.  On March 21st 2012, the committee visited Salish Soils in Sechelt to see an example of a Gore covered composting pile.

February 2012 headline
Net Zero Waste contracted to conduct feasibility study for a centralized composting facility.

Net Zero Waste is based out of Vancouver and visited the Powell River area on February 1st, 2012 to meet with the Composting Advisory Committee.  Mateo Ocejo presented  Net Zero Waste PRRD Presentation 2012 to the committee and suggested a site tour in late February to visit local composting facilities in our region.

In the fall of 2012, the Powell River Regional District appointed a new select advisory committee to research and recommend viable options for centralized composting in our community.
